Mark Hunt’s Weather Assessment
4th – 10th January 2010
Firstly, may I wish you all the best for 2010 and whatever it may bring to all of us.
Secondly, it won't have escaped your notice that it's pretty cold with daytime temperatures staying around about the freezing mark through the day and since this weather has been around for three weeks now, it's the earliest and most severe winter we've had for some time. Bear in mind though that February traditionally brings the coldest weather of the year, particularly in the first half of the month.
As I type this, the air temperature outside is dropping to - 4.5C and the soil temp is hanging on at +2.5C and really there is little possibility of this changing for the forthcoming week with a greater chance of snow from mid-week onwards principally affecting the north and east of the country as showers are blown in off the North Sea.
There may be a milder spell of weather at the beginning of next week, but, at present, it looks like being pretty short-lived with a return to cold and frosty, though not as cold as this week.
To end on a positive note, the evenings are getting lighter now and by the end of this month, we'll have another hour of daylight (Dec 30th - 8 hours / Jan 30th - 9 hours)
I'll keep you posted if this looks like changing.
